Annual Registration of Coconut Growers
Coconut growers should apply on an annual basis before March 1 to be registered with the Coconut Industry Board, by completing the registration form available at the Board’s offices or from the Advisory Officer in the parish and returning it to the Board.
The Board may extend the registration period to June 1 and where this is done, notice will be given. Applications for registration must be made in respect of each property that a grower cultivates with coconuts.
Registration is free and growers are encouraged to register in order to access benefits including seedlings, fertilizer, weed control grant, automatic insurance for trees against windstorm damage, voting rights and advisory services.
Licence for Exporting Coconut Products
Exporters of coconut products require a licence from the Board. Exempt from this requirement are amounts weighing less than 25 pounds being exported for personal use.
Procedure for Application for Export Licence
A written request should be addressed to the Coconut Industry Board, 18 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10, which should include the following:
1. Item(s) to be exported
2. Quantity to be exported and frequency (e.g., 2 dozen jellies weekly/monthly)
4. Name of Directors (if exporter is a company)
5. A valid JAMPRO Certificate confirming that the company is a registered exporter to be addressed to the Coconut Industry Board
There is an additional requirement for exporting bottled coconut water and that is the presentation to the Board of the Certificate from the Bureau of Standards for bottling establishments.
An Export Licence is issued on condition that a report be submitted by the exporters to the Board on a monthly basis and is granted for a period up to December 31st of the year within which the application is made or up to the date of validity appearing on the JAMPRO Certificate, whichever is earlier.
An import permit is required from the Board to import any coconut product (any product made wholly or in part by any part of the coconut) or substitute into the island. The cost for the permit is $500.00.
a. Fat or edible oil except oil or fat of animal origin
b. Any oil or fat producing item as follows: Almonds, Avocado, Castor Bean, Olives, Palm Kernel, Rape Seed, Cocoa, Ground Nut (Peanut), Linseed, Maize Germ, Nutmeg, Oil Palm Safflower, Sesame, Shea Nut, Soy Bean, Sunflower Seed.
c. Soap made wholly or in part from oil or fat except liquid or powdered detergent.
A request for an import permit should include the following information:
1. Type of product (e.g. bar soap, liquid soap, etc.)
2. Quantity (units, packs or cases). Please note that where product is packaged in cases/packs, the quantity per case/pack is required.
3. Weight of each product (e.g. 3.4 oz, 500 ml, 150 g, etc.)

A request for an import permit from the Coconut Industry Board should be made prior to importation. However, where items are imported without a permit being issued, a permit request should be made and the Board may grant the permit unconditionally.
A release permit from the Board will be required to effect clearance of the goods on their arrival in Jamaica. Application for the necessary release permit should be made by letter giving the name of the carrying vessel, date of its arrival, quantity and type of product arriving and be accompanied by copies of the Bill of Lading and the supplier’s invoice. You should also quote the number of the permit and the date. A cess of 8 cents per pound is levied on coconut products and on some substitutes.
